Help with high beams

Help Help Help Ok well I was driving at night time and I turned on my high beems like normal. After turning on the high beems they were stuck on. I couldnt get it back to normal headlights. Once I got home I took off the covers and a small clip about one inch fell out. It looks like a u clip at one end and at the other it looks like it would ride on something to pivot. So I figured this was the problem so I went to my local junk yard and pulled the clip. The only problem is I cant remember how it went back in. 
I know that was stupid put it was wet and cold and I was backwards pulling this damn clip out. If anyone knows what Iam talking about and can lead me in the right direction, that would be great.
