Auto or manual? Not trying to insult your intelligence, but make sure the tranny is in park/neutral.... otherwise it wont let you take the keys out. If its auto, move it into drive and then back into park.... could have not engaged in park right.

Make sure that there is no tension on the steering wheel in either direction. Sometimes the colum lock can get caught and the cylinder acts funny.

6spd.

I have tried removing the key in 1st gear (car off, hand brake up), and in Neutral (car off, hand brake up).

No luck

I feel incompetent already ... telling me to push a button wont make it worse!

ive tried everything recommended so far ... turning the wheel ... making sure the button is pushed ... trying in 1st and neutral ... ebrake up ...

It was acting up the past few days ... id have to put some force into turning her off a few times ... but this is the first time it actually has been STUCK.

Did you try wiggling the wheel kind of forcefully?

I disconnected the battery last night before going to sleep ... i was afraid my DRLs and gauge cluster would drain the battery

im going to re-connect the battery and try again,

i had that happen in my truck one time. it would get stuck and then after like two times of it getting stuck one day i started the truck, drove to work and it would not turn off any more. I had to leave it running in the parking lot until my dad could come and get it. We had to replace the ingition switch.
