Default ac compressor

i have a 99 camaro and the ac compressor makes a sort of grinding noise when the ac is off. it sounds as if two metal plates were rubbing together so my guess is the clutch isnt fully disengaging. when i turn the ac on i hear the clutch engage and the noise goes away but i would like to fix it because ive been driving around for the last month wit the ac always on. should i replace the whole compressor assembly or is there a cheaper way to fix it

Easier said than done, but if you look on ebay buy a new ac kit for 249.00 and be done with it, take it to someone have them pump it down, and dump the charge in it. I've put 2 ac compressors in mine, OEM and 4 seasons reman and it's just too easy to go out and buy a new one and be done with it. Of course I work in HVAC so I have all the tools to do it from start to stop but even if I didn't I wouldn't let it stand in the way.
