i just purchased a 01 t/a and changed my oil for the first time. it had 10w-30 conventional oil and i put royal purple 10w-30 in it. on inital start up it had a slight knock that i had not heard before but went away after a few minutes. but now every morning it does the same thing and i was wondering if it had something to do with oil or weight of oil? any suggestions?
welcome to the world of ls1's (that is the type of motor you have) mine does it along with many other members on here. its just a valve tap or piston slap and its nothing to worry about. just make sure you have good oil pressure and your good. if you really hate the noise try amsoil...i have heard that it helps the piston slap a little. hope this helps
Try to find the German made Castrol Syntec. It's a 0/30 synthetic, and you can find it at Autozone. Use the bigger Wix filter, and run 6 quarts. I've had NO knock OR consumption issues, and I run it for 5k miles.
where can i purchase 5w-40 and would it hurt my engine to change from 10w-30 it 5w-40?
no it wont hurt....you can find the 5w-40 at any auto parts store. if i were you and it was my car, i would def run the GC (German Castrol) 0w-30. search under this forum and you will find that A LOT!!!! of people swear by it for these type of engines. i switched about a month after i got my car and it made the piston slap a little better (like i said i wouldnt worry about it) but my oil pressure was better, i could get a hell of a lot more miles out of each oil change according to my oil analysis. most of all the OIL GOD himself PATMAN (member on LS1tech) uses it in all of his cars. that alone is enough proof for me. only thing is its kinda hard to find now, you can only find it at autozone and usually its the bigger autozones. check around for it and if you find it BUY IT!!! by far the best oil out there for our cars
Yea, Royal Purple 5w or 10w-30 is not a great oil to use in the LS1 IMO. Their Racing 41 is good though. I'd go with the GC if you can get it at Autozone.
