Default A/C Compressor Help

I searched the forums but couldnt find any info to help. Its a 2001 TA Stock LS1.

I was out driving today (with the a/c on) and the compressor starts making a loud tapping noise (similar to valve chatter). When the clutch engages it seems like there is a more than usual strain, like the engine is having to work harder to turn the pulley. The a/c still blows very cold air. Could this be a problem with the clutch/pulley assembly or the actual compressor? Any other info that would hlep in pinpoint the problem i can provide. Any help would be appreciated. Either fixing or replacing, i need my a/c, its hott as hell outside (especially when riding on black leather)!

mines doing the exact same thing, i was told it was the compressor's clutch going bad, a 65$ bearing, and 500$ worth of labor if you pay someone to do it. you can buy the bearing for 25$ and do it yourself with a special tool from autozone but you have to recharge your a/c system and replace your accumulator and someother stuff (this is what i was told, so dont bash me if its not right)
