Fixing the hatch supports?

Fixing the hatch. The rear hatch rods on my Camaro are now going dead, and therefor keeping my hatch from staying up. Does anyone know of a good way to fix this? Kinda hard to put in the t-tops with your head holding the hatch up.
If you're on a budget, keep a Vise-Grip in your trunk and lock that sucker on the strut once you raise the trunk. I would just get new struts, but if you happen to have a VG laying around, go for it.
