Default harmonic balancer, tensioner, or both?

Sometimes my belt squeels, and I have no idea why. It only does it under load, not idling. Really though this is a fairly intermittent problem, amplified when the belt gets at all wet (my hood has one small leak). Also it consistently skips one rib towards the rear of the car if I go above 3k rpm. Are these problems correlated? Maybe when I shift at a higher rpm the change from lots of torque to none is too much for my old tensioner and it skips a rib? What about the squeeling? Thanks~

Check your pulley alignments. Water pump, alternator, and balancer should be lined up within 1/8 inch of each other. If not, re-align the offending pulley. Should fix up your walking belt. Oh, and fix the water leak. An old, wet belt will wail.

I should clarify that the belt moves one rib ONLY on the harmonic balancer...so I think the rest of the system is lined up.

It may be, also I screwed up some threads on the long hub bolt a couple months ago when I tried to remove the balancer with the bolt stil screwed in. (three jaw was pushing on the threaded bolt). Maybe the hub moved out a little? The harmonic balancer does look to be a little forward of the tensioner.

Quite possible. The balancer should be lined up with the other pulleys. You might need to tighten down the pulley bolt too. Don't use the bolt to push down the pulley tho! Lotsa torque on that thing. Instead, get a oversized socket and, using it and a cushion between the pulley and socket, bang it back down onto the crank end. It's press fit, and held in place by the bolt. Old carpet works well as a cushion, but a rubber pad is best. 'Course, that'a assuming you've got room to swing the hammer.
