no power

no power last night when i started my car my key got stuck farther forward than normal and some of the warning lights came on. after some jiggling it popped into the right spot and the lights went off. then today the same thing happened only it was a lot harder to get it to the right spot then once i did, i turned it off and tried to restart but had no power. no lights, no gages, and i don't hear any noise when i try to start it. i was already going to replace the window motor so i went ahead and did that with no trouble and when i finished i replaced the battery but i still get nothing. also, the key still gets stuck in the ignition. i think the problem is the ignition lock cylinder based on other threads here and a brief talk with a mechanic, but is there anything else i should check? is the ignition lock cylinder something i can replace myself (limited experience)? thanks for your help and sorry this got long!
