Default Code PO171 and PO174 - MAF - Fix itself?

Hey all,

so a bit ago my car started to idle a bit funny when I came to a stop. Car would never cutoff though- and it also threw a SES code sporadically.

Well it hasn't thrown the code in a couple days, but the idle was still funny this morning. Well tonight when I get ready to head over to my friends house to pull the code in the history (HP TUNER)... the car was acting fine.

Well the codes were PO171 and PO174 .... seems that its a lean condition and is caused by a dirty MAF?
One of my clips was broke for a week or so - so the lid wasn't sealing all the way down over the filter - well I have since bought a new clip and got a new K&N filter.

is it possible it could fix itself? maybe I had something on the MAF that worked itself off? I checked it out - it looked ok, and the whole way home it was running fine.

Update - today the SES comes back on -
car is still idling / driving fine though.

So... I take the MAF out - clean it with rubbing alcohol and q-tips, resecure all of my hoses and fittings on the MAF / Lid etc.

SES light is still on. I let the car sit and idle for 15 mins.

I'm going to go give it a test run and drive a bit and see if goes back off and stays off.

Any opinions / options / input?
Thanks

SES for P0171/4 should go off after 3 or 4 ignition cycles without a failure, if not cleared will stay in "history" for 40 cycles after the light goes off. If cleaning the MAF doesn't fix it could be something else, look it up at gearchatter.com and do the diagnostics.

well it popped back on after driving around a bit.

is there anything else obvious that it could be?
I made sure all the connections in the intake tract - from lid to Intake were intact so I don't think its that, I retightened everything.

I think i'm going to change my fuel filter next and see if that will clear anything up. (is that a possibel cause?)

could my MAF just be taking a crap on me? I doubt that would be it... but I just don't know.

thanks for the website 2001NBMZ28 - lots of useful stuff.

some more help though please - anyone?

turned out I had a bad vacuum leak on the intake manifold. replaced the ring, and put some gasket maker on it, and good to go. Stopped throwing codes, and idle went right back to normal.

so i'd recommend that be the first place you look. leaks.
