Question Another Electrical Problem - HELP!

Its a 98 trans Am, Whenever I have the ignition relay and the fuel pump relay plugged in at the same time, the fuel pump wont turn on, and the odometer will light up solid red when the key is turned on. If I pull the pull the ign. relay out, the fuel pump and odom. work fine but obviously it wont fire. If I bypass the ign. relay with a piece of wire its gets really hot and melts the wire. I had a problem with the altenator wire too, but I just ran a new wire and it worked fine. The car has a history of electrical problems. I think I have some hot wires crossed somewhere but I'm not sure. I've checked over a good part of the harness already and cant find anything. with the altenator, guages, ignition, and fuel pump wires, where would be the first place to start checking for crossed, burnt, or mangled wires? or could this be the cause of some bad connected grounds. Any help would be appreciated. thanks

stick a voltmeter on those ign. relay wires...seeing what its running at....you also could just have a bad relay period...because if its out of the loop and everything is running....that kinda gives you an idea
