clunk...need help

clunk...need help Ok well i was driving today at about 40mph. I let my foot off the gas and i was coasting. I then hear a clunk and my tach drops to zero but my car is still running (2001 Z28 A4). I pull into a side street and my car dies. I try to start it a few times and it would turn over but it would sound really rough and wouldnt start. Finally i got it to start and it was idling fine. I dropped it in drive and it began to run really rough and started to chug hard and it died. So i started it up again and it ran fine in reverse. I then tried to put it in drive again and it did the same thing. I called my dad to come pick me up and i called a tow truck. My dad came and he started it up and put it in drive and it drove normal. We towed it anyways just in case. Any idea what the hell the problem is? My buddy said it might be the torque converter. please help!
