wierd problem

wierd problem i was driving tonight and my car was acting a little funny...now the tranny has been slipping alittle and being an A4 thats not uncommon, but while i was driving and not getting into it it was like the car keep trying to kill itself...like it wasnt getting enough spark or fuel...then when i was shutting her down, i turned the key and the car shut off, but instead of shutting of normally it was like i took of the negative bat. cable off....so then i turned the key back on and it reset my radio and my trip gauge......then i was driving to go get some milk and it like cut out on me again so i punched it and after the slack went away and i hooked i got a SERVICE VEHICLE LIGHT and acording to the manual this light means thats its a deff. problem in the engine/tranny and its not related to emissions like the SERVICE ENGINE SOON light is......got any ideas what the hell is going on!!!!!!!!!
