Lost keys, dealer replacement doesnt work on ignition.

Default Lost keys, dealer replacement doesnt work on ignition.

his is for my buddies 2000 trans am, lost the keys, head the dealer cut a new set, door works ignition doesnt. Had a second key made, in case the first was cut bad, still no worky.

So we are looking at replacing the ignition, and the manual transmission one is more $. Im guessing its the button to take the key out. Can we use a regular automatic lock? Im guessing its the sam eother then the button.

Local locksmiths arent being any help. Suggestions?

Is the key not turing over or the car is not starting?

If the key turns but the car won't start they may have given you the wrong resistor in your key. There are 14 different ones and the dealer should know the right one by your VIN. Dealers are not rocket scientists though and everyone can make a mistake....Without the right resistor in your key it will never start unless you bypass the VATS.

Just as an FYI... Here are all the potential resistor values for the 4th gen Fbody...I was wrong there are 15. If you have a Radio Shack tester and have an operating key you can check the resistance of your cars key by placing the meter to the "Ohms" setting and placing one lead on one side of the pellet in the key and the other lead on the opposite side. Once you know that number you can buy ignition keys cheap off of ebay since you will know your resistance. Then anyplace that makes keys can cut the blank for you.

681 ohms
887 ohms
1130 ohms
1470 ohms
1870 ohms
2370 ohms
3010 ohms
3740 ohms
4750 ohms
6040 ohms
7500 ohms
9530 ohms
11800 ohms

Thinking wrong resistor pelet value too - is security light staying on? Already paid the dealer for new keys, they should make it good. Probably not the ignition if no problems before losing the keys.

Sorry for the late response, but teh car is still sitting. Key will not turn, its looking like he may have to replace the lock cylinder. Tried jiggling the keys, lubing the lock, you name it we tried it, but it goes in and just wont turn. Old key worked flawlessly. Door key works but you have to play with it a bit. We tired 2 keys cut from the same dealer. They screwed up the first cut and went over it and that didnt dwork, so we asked for a complete new key and that doesnt work either. They also cut the door key bad the first time so we dfound a guy at another dealer willing to cut the key on his machine and compare it to ours and see how it looks. Im not holding my breath though. Second dealer did confirm they have the same key code for the cars VIN as the first dealer wass cuttihng. Looking like the whole ignition lock will need to be replaced. Does not look liek a fun job on this car either!

Anyone have a write-up on replacing the ignition lock? Ive searched but havnt found one for the actual lock.
