Default rear end service

Does anyone have a write up about doing your own rear end service like what the dealership would do. I tried a search and that turned up nothing.

No need for a full write up. It's very simple. You just pull the diff cover (10 bolts), let the fluid drain out, remove any old gasket material, put the cover back on with a new gasket, pull the fill plug on the right side top of the diff, fill with fluid (80W90 dino for '98 or 75W90 synthetic for '99+) and 4 ounces of GM limited slip additive till it pours out the fill plug (about 1.75 quarts).

The end.

Then how would you get fluid back into it? They all have the fill plug on the forward side of the axle near the upper passenger side of the diff.

It's a drain plug they don't have stock. The aftermarket covers usually do have that though.

ah ok. I thought GM might have had them on a stand facing down and put fluid in them like that. I've never looked close at the 10 bolt, so I didn't know.

You could also rig up a way to suck and fill the differential fluid from the fill hole. Sounds hard but very possible. There are "Flush" machines at local shops that essentially do just that if you absolutly don't want to pull the differential cover.

We had one of those machines at my shop and I hated the thing. I would always pull the cover whenever possible.

To add to RPM WS6: Don't forget to wipe all metal off of the magnet on the diff cover (if the stock 10-bolt has one, I forget ) and wipe out the inside of the housing with a rag as well. Get as much of the old junk out of there as you can.

Why dino oil for 98s? It recommends 75w90 in the manual and as long as it has the lsd additive, it is good, right? I have been using 75w90 synthetic for years and no problems.

dino in 98 due to the fact its standard with the auburn which uses clutch packs...99+ have the torsen standard......... and also screw the suck machines.... with the cover off you get a change to for wear on the ring and pinion and give a good overall look..also you can check the magnetic for any unusually amount of metal particals..... u cant do this with a sucky machine
