Higher RPM's
Higher RPM's Hey guys. Well today i was driving to work and i had to get across traffic to reach my exit so i stepped on the gas. My car is an A4 and was in 4th. Well, when it downshifted I heard a loud clunk noise. It sounded almost like a piece of metal hitting my undercarriage. Well, after that I was driving on the street and i noticed that my RPM's would remain higher than usual when I let off the gas. Before, when i released the gas the RPM's would go down to about 1500 well now they go down to about 2000 and just sit there. Also, the car started to heat up quickly when i was driving on the street and this never happens. Plus, at stoplights the car would idle at about 1000 and surge up and down notiveabley. Any idea what it could be guys? Is my converter going out? Let me know what you all think. Thanks.

sounds like to me you broke something inside the converter. this, IMO, is the best case of transmission failure since now you have a reason to get a stall 
now i'm NO expert with transmissions by ANY means, but this one sounds like converter for sure.
i'll let the real experts chime in.
btw, this should be posted in the automatic transmission section. you won't get jack **** for replies here in comparison. none of the A4 sponsors come in here much, and they're the real experts.

IMO, by the time you buy a new stall, have it remanufactured and get it installed again...you might be better off buying a built trans with a new stall in it from the sponsor. but that's just my opinion. i think if anything ever went out on my trans, i'd just bite the bullet and get a built one.
