Default Information on diagnosing ABS/TCS problems

The ABS and Airbag Blues Thread

NOTICE!
I have decided to attach PDF's to help you guys diagnose your ABS and Airbag related problems.
I had to change the file extension to get them to upload due to their size.
YOU MUST change the file extension back in order to read them.
Thank you.

If you PM me I will try to assist you time allowing...

Things to consider when working on your ABS
  • Rubber isolators can't be purchased at the dealer or anywhere else.
  • Frame rail mounting bracket can't be purchased at the dealer.
  • Get replacement parts from the vehicle as closest to yours as possible.
  • Driving with a broken ABS system is very dangerous. Just unplug it completely until it is fixed. The car will behave like a car without ABS.

Identification

Figure 1: A typical 4 Channel ABS module pulled from a 2001 Camaro. The 4 channel module is a slightly different shape than the 3 channel module, however, it is easier to identify which ABS module you have my simply checking the rearward face for two brake lines. Both modules are very similar in shape and pin-out.

Where to find the Class 2 Data line connector
This is located under the dash. You have to remove the knee bolster. It is on the right most side.

ABS Trouble Codes
Even though our ABS module works off the same Vehicle Serial Interface (VSI-C2) as the PCM, only engine codes can be pulled by most scan tools on my market. You will need a special instrument like a Tech2 or a special tuning package like EFILive to pull codes from the other modules onboard IE the airbag mod, IP cluster, ABS mod. Without a code you are totally shooting in the dark.

U Codes
U codes are network codes pertaining to the J1850 GM (Class 2) serial network. This means the device is not responding to network broadcasts or the device is expecting a broadcast from another option/module not installed in the vehicle. This would happen if you installed a module in your car and the donor car had options your car doesn't. The module will freak out when it can't find the ONSTAR module which isn't on your car. All of your modules have learned the identity of each other and check up on each other every 2 seconds.

U codes are the hardest to diagnose and the most frusterating, but, this piece of information will help you greatly: A module with a stored U code is not the problem. That is one of the modules that is waiting for data packages it thinks should have been broadcasted.

Try relearning all the modules with a Tech2 or try a replacing the module in question. If neither of these solves the problem head directly to the splice pack connector/star pack connector. Check to make sure the data line is held to ground or power. Try removing the devices one by one through the splice pack connector.

C Codes
C codes are general trouble codes and usually fixed by replacing user servicable parts, reconfiging the module with a Tech2, or fixing a broken wire.
