Question what sensor controls odometer

hey guys my cuzins 98 z28 a4 that he got about 2 months ago is acting up.
the odometer stoped working yesterday then today it worked then stop again.
since its a electric speedo what sensor or system controls it?
i had a 95 eclipse 5 speed that was my dd and a sensor on the tranny went out and stoped the odometer so thats why im figuring thats the prob.

the "VSS" (Vehicle Speed Sensor) can't remember what side it's on. I'm guessing the left? You only have two connectors in the A4 with 2 wires and the big one for the computer. I believe the VSS goes through the PCM then to the odometer

To answer your question exactly, the PCM controls the odometer. It recieves a frequency signal from the VSS (two wire, yellow w/black and black) sensor that is mounted on the passenger side of the transmission extension housing. Then the PCM sends a converted analog speed signal to the instrument panel cluster.

so if this sensor went bad what would happen?
would the odometer stop?
the car had some tranny work before he got it so maybe the shop sckrewed up some thing

Yes, you would set all types of codes, the speedo would stop working, the ABS light would come on, etc. etc..

when i had my 94 tagt, when the vss was unpluged the transmission wouldnt shift out of 2nd and the speedometor wouldnt work.
