Would you say, my rear end weas grinding and popping. So I changed the gear lube. 500 miles later the rear end gave up....damn new gear lube.

Flushing will not move anything that isn't already moving w the tranny operating. Autos have a pump built in, they operate at pressure. Flushing is used to get more of he fluid out of the trans since it doesn't all come out the pan(alot is trapped in the converter and elsewhere). It is not to pressure wash the inside or anything--just to get more of the actual fluid changed out.

DO NOT FEAR THIS BASIC MAINTENANCE PROCEEDURE!

*Thant being said--don't let a shop (Jiffy Lube or other quick oil change places) flush w/out dropping the pan and changing the filter...that is a $ maker 4 them that is a gimmick. You wouldn't change your engine oil w out changing the filter would you?
.

see thats exactly the way I was thinknig about it. and yea my fluid actually looks pretty good so im gonna drop the pan change the filter and fill it back up and call it a day and move on with the other maintence things

Go for it.....I did the flush and filter on mine when it had 95k and 2 weeks later 2nd and 3rd gear where gone on my A4. Had to buy a new tranny cause apparently it was cheaper to replace than repair. Like you've heard already theres arguments on from both sides. I just don't have $1,300 to spare for a new tranny so i'm holding off on any trans flushes for now.

Yeah the thing Is ive had only to rebuild on 2 gms (both V6s) and they always drive like ****. Like my GTP now will drive and shift ok, but if im in reg traffic, it'll want to seek the lowest RPM/Gear it can go into just after 70kph and then its doin 1250-1300rpm and boggs. The thing is I know for sure it never did it when the orig. tranny was in, it felt fairly smooth. But yeah your right Id have to try another shop.....lol or i'll stick to the M6ers

"Your tranny failed because of the condition that burned your fluid in the 1st place. Its crazy to blame the flushing. Its like blaming washing your car for a mechanical failure. How on earth would it be benificial to leave compromised fluid in a tranny?"

Yeah I didnt check the fluid when I bought the car (so good knows what the guy before me did ) and I let it go for about 6-8 months and it got worse, I didnt have much faith in the tranny in the first place to be honest. You could almost see it getting darker from month to month. They are known to crap out at lower milage(the 4th gear was demoed). But yeah I figure the guy before me had probably driven it hard since he bought it. But the trans def. did not like the flush at all, shifted wierd, especially in the winter cold(when it got warm it drove better), but i wouldnt personally flush a high milage tranny, unless proper service has been done.

Sounds exactly like what my old Toyota did after a higher mileage first time flush.

As a former Service Manager of a dealership, change the fluid.

I use the ATP filter kit because I like the black felt/fiber gasket (it expands when wet to seal up any leaks) that comes with it.

Mine has 70k on it and seeing this thread is making me cringe. I have no idea if the previous owner looked after the transmission or not. i guess i'll pull the dipstick and have a look.

Ive got 50K on minw ans I changed teh fluid in BOTH the Diff and Tranny...

The car now , M6, accelerates better smoother, shifts better...
The middle ground heer is to NOT flush but to just change the fluid and filter. The advantage to flushing is that you cag go to a completely diffrent fluid...changing is just that..you replace the fluid with the exact type and clean the filter

Problem with an A4 is that if you just pull the pan off, 4 quarts fall out, while the torque converter still retains 8 quarts (and also the cooler retains a quart).
