Default temp going nuts

ok so i sat in about 30 minutes of traffic today and then stopped at advanced to get some cleaning supplies to clean the car this weekend.

came back out to the car and radiator fluid was in a little trickle on the ground, i got it home and filled it...still can't figure out where it was coming from.

on the way home i noticed the temperature gauge was going from 190 - about 220 every couple of seconds, like it would go to 190 stay there for like 5 seconds then switch to 220...it did this the whole way home.

is my car trying to tell me the thermostat is dead and i need to replace it? i have no idea what's going on and really can't afford to have this motor take a crap on me when i've got my build coming this summer...

anyone got any ideas?

Maybe your water pump is going bad. Check the weep hole on the pump. If it's leaking, the pump is bad. Other than that, check the radiator for leaks and look around the thermostat for a leak.

ya i'd check the seems of the radiator, any obvious hose leaks, leaks around the water pump, and leaks back on the firewall where the heater hoses go into the car. If you dont see any visible leaks i'd change the stat, and do a coolant flush and pressure test. Go from there and see what you come up with
