Default front end alignment- new tires

I wanted to know if you guys get your front alignment before you put the new tires on or after? I was thinking about getting it done a couple of weeks before and then putting the new wheels and tires on. I am going from factory 16's to the ZR1 17's. It would be more convenient for me to do it that way.

Also do you guys use someone that does the measuring back and forth to set it or the machines that they put on the outside of the lip of the rims on the tires (they look like jaws)? I had an experience where they hit the outside of the rims with those metal ends and dented my wheels. It was a reputable place. I use to go to someone that did only measuring and set it like that.

Any opinions???

Have the tires replaced and an alignment done at the same time, tires go on first and then it goes straight to the alignment rack.
