Default engine getting hot

My temp gauge all of the sudden started rising when I was driving today, it got really hot when I was stopped, like at a stoplight. When I would drive the temp would go down, so I know there is somthing wrong with the cooling fan. The engine coolant level is fine, no leaking. So I replaced all three cooling fan relay switches. It still gets hot, and now the service engine soon light is on. Anyone have any suggestions?

If you suspect they're not coming on at all you can check the fans/wiring/relays on the 95-97 cars by jumping the pins at the 16 pin DLC connector as a test. See http://shbox.com/1/4th_gen_tech2.html#cooling (scroll down). Also could be something as simple as a bad radiator cap not holding pressure.

Check to see if there is a plastic bag stuck between the radiator and the condenser(sp). That one caused me some serious heart ache a while back.

I would suggest checking the cap, make shure that it is fully seated and the gasket is there and in good condition, if need be caps are not too much in price, if that does not work than make shure nothing is blocking the flow of the radiator, and blow some compressed air through the fins, like 10 psi, there could be some dirt build up

I know this has been discussed many times, but just in case anyone isn't aware the fan activation temps are very high in these cars, I believe it's 227 degrees for the low speed fan and 235 for both low and high fans together. That's why a lot of people either reprogram the pcm to turn them on sooner or hook up manual fans activation switches to turn them on whenever you want them. That's what I'm going to do. There's a little writeup on that here:

I had same problem with 2000 WS6. Checked fans, OK, flushed cooling system problem remained. Replaced radiator problem solved. I am in Arizona so overheating can't be ignored at all. I always use distilled water and antifreeze, but still had rust ect build up in the radiator after 130K miles.

buy manual fan switch, had the same promblems a while back, flushed radiator, new cap, new thermostat, relays checked, fuses good, fans were good, engine temp sensor replaced, tried everything, eventually just bought a manual fan switch from summit and fixed the promblem. some guy posted a while back saying he had the same promblem and it turned out to be a promblem with his engines computer.

A new thermostat would be where I would start. Cheap and easy.
