Default Wifes car throws SES light...help.....!

Alright so I just started up my wifes car, 2000 Pontiac Grand Am V6....and I get the SES light of death....
I plug in my Diablosport tuner and get a code as follows.

"P 0440 EVAP Control System, Malfunction"

WTF?
I restarted the car a few times, and even tried to delete this code and I got another code that says Incompatible format????

Anyone know what the deal is? is it possible a sensor went out...or even just a stupid glitch...My wife said as of this morning the SES light was NOT on at all....so it was JUST tonight when it started...I dunno weird.. the car runs fine though...

Maybe your gas cap wasn't fully closed. That can throw an EVAP code

True about the gas cap. Check the rubber seal on yours - it might be dried out and cracked. If so, get a new one from the dealer. It could have also been that the cap wasn't put on tight enough. This code can be a bitch to track down, since it could be a leak in the system as small as a pin hole. The dealer has a machine to push smoke through the system, to try and locate the leaks.
