Sorry about the late post....I'm going to list some questions too. As for checking the coils, it looks pretty intensive, requiring the Tech2, maybe someone here might have another suggestion. These questions and comments are coming stright out of the service manual, you may have answered them earlier, I'm feeling lazy

Check for any loose grounds, failing alternator, or battery.
Check operating temp.
Are the plugs and plug wires in good condition?
Check fuel pressure and test injectors.
Lightly mist the ignition system, observe any arcs or misfires, may help with finding damaged components.
Test the MAP sensor (I'll look into that later, again, likely requires the Tech2?).

Does it idle fine and free rev ok when you hit the throttle?

it idles alright. but it shudders very slightly. almost sounds like I might have a slight miss, but no codes or anything showing.

well I believe it was the pcv valve, I pulled it and it was clogged completely and looked like it was probably the original. no problems since replacing it

ya I am glad and pissed at the same time. I am glad the problem is fixed but pissed that it took me this long just to find out that it was some little $1 part that took no effort to replace.

Better to take forever to find a $1 part problem, then to replace everything, spend possibly $100's, then only to find out it was a $1 part. I think we can all use this as a learning tool, or a reinforcing tool, to check the simple things first, and then move on to the more complicated/expensive components.
