Transmission fluid and gear oil question???
Hey guys im still pretty new to the whole LS1 thing and have a dumb question: Whats the difference between tramsission fluid and gear oil? im getting those and the the rear diff oil all mixed up.....any help for this noob is greatly appreciated!
Don't get them mixed up, you **** will be fubr'd all to hell.
Atf is a form hydraulic oil, while diff juice is just a heavy weight oil.

Everybody's got to start somewhere, so I'll give you a straight answer before the other boys start in.
Gear oil refers to a thicker weight oil used in the rear end and in manual trannys. In the old days it was mostly 90 weight. It's main function is to lubricate gears. It now comes in multi weights like 75-90 and many others and also synthetics. There is a wide range of opinions on the 'right' one to use but it is still basically a heavy gear lube oil. Depending upon the vehicle, special additives may be needed.
ATF or automatic transmision fluid is a much different thing. DO NOT CONFUSE THE TWO.
ATF is a hydraulic fluid like what runs power steering and other applications like the controls on heavy equipment. It's main function is not lubrication but to power a hydraulic pump and is designed for it's ability to resist compression in the pump. It also can be vehicle specific.
Please do not attempt to change these fluids until you are clear on the difference and know the proper kind to use in your vehicle. Because, as stated above, everything will go FUBAR on you. (fu*ked beyond all repair).
