Default AIR problem

My first post and question. I've been reading the posts on the EGR and AIR systems and haven't come across my problem yet. On my 2002 the AIR system hose going into the right side (passenger side) of the manifold is running so hot that the hose has spit once and been replaced and still continues to have smoke rise from it and smells like burning rubber. From what I've read the AIR pump comes on at startup to warm up the cats and cuts off at normal operating temp. I'm thinking that there must be a valve that is sticking open and I'm actually getting exhaust blow back into that hose and that's why it's getting so hot. Any thoughts on this.

the valve is prolly built into the pump itself....how close is the pipe from the manifold? i think mine leads straight away and up from it so it prolly doesn't radiate too much heat.

The major heat is where the rubber hose meets the metal inlet. It doesn't seem to be a problem with the radiant heat...more of heat being blasted throught the hose. When the hose originally split I could hear the exhaust sound come through it.

There is a one-way check valve in there that could be damaged, causing your problem. Do you need your smog equipment in VA? If not, block it off and call it a day.

I've had a check valve get plugged before, but I've never heard of one getting stuck open. But from the sound of it that might be what happened to yours. The check valve is right above the manifold, I would take it off (need a 1" wrench I think) and make sure it works properly, it should only allow air to flow in one direction. If air can flow both ways through it then replace it, they're like $12 at Autozone.

From personal experience, I wouldn't say they stuck open, but I've had mine flutter when I installed LT headers. I blocked them off and was good to go after that. I left AIR connected for the appearance of having the stock smog equipment. I'll remove them after this year's registration.
