Default Coolant light?

I just bought my car about a week and a half ago, it is currently sitting outside...sigh...This really sucks not being able to drive it until spring. Anyways I have been trying to work out a little of the bugs it has, and one of them is the low coolant light is on. The guy I bought it from said it has been on for years now, and it hasn't overheated or anything so he didn't worry about it, well having a light on is one of my pet peeves. I would rather get your opinion before I take it to the dealership and have them charge me 40 bucks to run the codes on it. What do you suggest?

Another thing is my SES light was on and the guy I bought it from said it was a clogged cat. Well I was driving down this really steep ramp (long story) and the cat scraped a little and now the SES light isn't on anymore. Is this bad that it all of a sudden shut off? I am guessing I unclogged it lol....

Thanks!

Your coolant level sensor is probably dead. It's a 30-40 dollar part that's fairly easy to replace. It's separate from the SES light.

Also, you can take your car to the local auto parts store (autozone, advance, etc) and they should be able to run the codes on it.

Would they run the codes for free?

Is it fairly easy to change? Will I lose a bunch of coolant changing it?

Thanks!

Yeah they'll check them for free. All it is an OBD2 scanner. Nothing high tech.

As for the coolant thing, I believe there's a writeup floating around here somewhere. You might even think about changing your fluid anyway.
