How bad can it be? Engine fragged?
So coming home tonight I hit about 100 MPH in 3rd gear (A4) on the freeway onramp. I heard the rev limiter hit and then the engine died. Now it will crank freely, but acts like it's out of time. That is, I can hear cylinders firing, just not enough to make it run or do more than cough.
I cranked it briefly just to be sure the oil pump was still working. It builds pressure and no check engine appears. I'm thinking that I've done some sort of horrible internal damage.... At the very least it seems that my car is out of time.
So how can I verify this without tearing the top end of the car apart? What else might this possibly be?

10k miles on a rebuilt engine... I'd like to hope the chain didn't break.
I think I need to check for spark and fuel before I go any farther...
A friend of mine suggested that the Optispark is known to fail under high RPM conditions. I'll check spark tonight.
Thanks for the suggestions!
