overheating????
i drove my 99 a4 to florida 2 weeks ago ran great but when i got off exits for gas the temp would jump to 260 and had to pull over, it did it everytime i got off. i let it sit for 5 minutes start it back up and drive and it would be fine.. now today just cruising around it did it and i was not at high speeds at all it seemed that the thermostat would close and it would overheat then it would open an go back down.. it did it 6 or 7 times before i got home and parked it, i had a 160 in it and it was messing up so i put a new OEM one in and i still have the problem???? anything thanks........

Make sure there are no leaks. Might as well change the radiator cap, there cheap and could cause over heating.
Youmay want to take it to a shop and have the system pressure tested. Also cheap and maybe free. This will show the problem fast more than likely.
Also look under the car and take a look at the bottomof the waterpump

Start the engine and turn the A/C "on", make sure both fans are working. Also, make sure both fans are working in both low and high settings.
If the coolant is not boiling over when its at 260 degrees at least you know you have good head gaskets.
The fan(s) seem to be out. Or maybe the new t-stat is a dud.

The engine will overheat during city driving if the fans are not coming on. On the highway you do not need the fans and they do not come on, the front air damn is what cools the coolant at highway speeds.
