Default Volt Gauge Pegged

Beat on my car the other day and as soon as i let off the volt gauge went to 18. check gauges light went on, as well as ABS INOP light. The volt gauge will jump all around tho. Started it up a minute ago and the gauges went all crazy like the computer was being reset or something. Any ideas?
Im thinking its most likely the ALT but just wanna make sure.

I just had that problem. Right at 17 volts all the ABS, ASR, etc modules cut off. At some point the alt itself cuts out, then back on.
My headlights both blew out, it was nice to see the power windows work right for once.

The problem I found was a missing seal around the alternator plug, it let water get in the voltage regulator and it just raised hell.

Well it's been fine since, I was driving in rain when it happened, and the seal was missing. At the end of my trip (15 miles) it had stopped raining and started charging right.
I found the seal missing when I went to do some tests.

You might have a different situation if yours just did this for no reason. This was the first time this car has been driven in the rain since I got it.
