cracked header

cracked header ok so my SES light comes on, take it to a mechanic and says that it is because my drivers side header is cracked and is causing my o2 sensor to go off.
he says he can fix it by replacing the header with factory headers (i would have to do both) but the car, when i bought it, came with edelbrock shorties.
since exhaust seems to be the first mod every one does, i figured id get it out of the way now.
But i wanted to know if it is possible to pass emissions with LT, Ive read the facts and they say no, you cant so stick with shorties, but ive read other stuff of people claiming that they have gotten away with passing emissions while having LT.
so what should I do about my current dilemma?
o yeah, i also need to have my car smog checked in a few weeks to renew the registration on my car.
