Re: How do you test stock coils Well we are in the process of doing that since it throws a random misfire code on cylinder #2 in my cousin's 02 Hawk...that is what it showed on two consecutive tests using Autotap...so we at least narrowed it down to the particular cylinder...having said that...we checked the plugs, wires, etc....I don't think you can test those coils...it will have to be a trial by error......so obviously Autotap will help....after that and it gives you the misfires to the particular cylinder...in our case #2 then we are gonna switch coils (the one from cylinder #2 to say # 3 or #4...assuming the coil is the culprit of the misfire code..then after changing it with another cylinder....Autotap will show us the misfire is now occuring on cylinder #3 or #4 which ever you changed the #2 coil to ......assuming the COIL is bad....if it still shows random misfire on cylinder #2 then that is a whole different ballgame......not one you want to deal with......sorry so long but that is one way of doing it......

Re: How do you test stock coils There are ways to test them with specialized equipment though.
A poor coil will show itself , as a miss or even if PCM doesn't get the proper feedback it will set an ignition coil control code.
