Default Exhaust size sound differences?

A friend of mine always mentions things about this, and before I say anything I would like to know what's right.... lol

If you have the same exhaust setup, but different sizes, say one in 2.5" and one in 3", will it sound any different?

I've never heard side-by-side fbodys to compare different exhaust pipe diameters... but I have heard mustangs. - One with headers and complete 2.5 true duals... the other with headers and full 3in true duals(h-pipes included). Both relatively bone stock with flowmaster systems

the 2.5 system sounded 'cleaner' and was higher-pitched, almost a tuned sound... the 3in was a tad louder, much deeper, and had somewhat of a hollow, 'echo'-like sound

yes the bigger, the deeper. the smaller, the more "throttley" sounding. in general.

imports have oversized exhausts to the point where they have no throttleness to them. just one pitch coming out no matter what rpm, and you cant here each cylinder's fire because it echos so much. sounds like one constant sound.. you'd need very large duals to get that in our cars though.

Hmmm.... i didn't know that. Ok, so question then. I wasn't wondering this before, but now I am... Which would most likely be deeper, 2x2.5" or 1x4" pipe?
