Default Open headers?

I am going to be installing my headers next weekend and after then install will need to drive about a total of 30 miles or so to get my exhaust put on. My question is, since i have heard i will ruin the front o2s should i just leave them unplugged until i get to the exhaust shop? thanks guys. Will leaving them unplugged ruin my spark plugs?

Car will run like **** with front o2 unpluged. Go to the auto parts store and get some cheap exhaust splices they will have a flair on one end so the can slide on the colector. 12'' should do.

i drove around like that for a few days on my old z28 untill i could get my new exhaust on, and besides the insane loudness and gassy smells it didn't hurt a single thing on my car.

worse case scenarios people have been seeing on the forums are it ruining your O2 sensors and/or spark plugs. other than that you'll be ok

i only started my car with open headers during the install, just for *****. and god was it amazing. if it didnt attract so much attention i'd run open headers with turn downs as a permanent setup. such a top fuel dragster feel. i loved it!!!!

well i would really hate to ruin my spark plugs or 02s since i just bought brand new ones of each and really cant afford to buy more... I guess i am going to try and put some 12 in pipes off my headers and pray i can make it to the shop before i ruin something i guess.

The problem with the open header is the o2 sensor is right at the end of the collector and its getting mixed temperature from the colder out side air and the hotter exhaust gas. The 12'' extentions will keep them in consistant hot exhaust.

It's weird how people think.
Cooler air that creeps up the 8" of collector and hits the O2's is not going to damage them by the temperature difference, it's going to be the high oxygen content this air has. This is going to act as a lean condition and add fuel. Thats going to foul plugs if anything, and fouled plugs can/will (might) ruin the O2's.

Who can prove that cold air hitting a hot O2 ruined it?
I'm not looking for a "well my buddy did this and that and his got ruined by cold air" I mean show me pics of the damage cause by cold air hitting a hot O2 sensor.
No one can do this because no one takes O2 sensors apart and evaluates the cause of failure. They get tossed in the garbage.

I never said cold air hitting the o2 will ruin them. Its the differant temps causing the computer to change the fuel/air mixture, Its the way the engine is going to run that could ruin sparkplugs and o2's. Also my kook's have about 4'' long collectors.

I know you didn't. What I said was based on several threads I've seen about this same topic. People have hundreds of opinions. I just added mine.

i would just leave them unplugged for the trip, the only thing it will do is put the car in open loop (limp mode) the same as if your 02's were to go out on their own. it will run a little rough, but will not hurt anything, but i would not waste the time/money/effort on the extensions just for a 30 mile trip, or risk having to replace the o2's

so there is a difference open headers vs say headers and cut outs??
I hear guys talking about running cut outs all the time... with no problems.
Is this cause the cutouts act like the 12 in extensions would...
The cutouts keep the O2s completely in exhaust so the mixture stays OK?

I can tell you large amounts of cold water will ruin O2's. I fried both of them when I had to drive down a flooded street. It sucked there was no other way I could go. The other streets were closed. It was about a $160.00 7 mile trip.
