Default Disadvantages of underdrive pully

What are the disadvantages of getting one?

Thanks,
Dave

NONE!

Only good things happen:
More rwhp and rwtq.
Longer life for your accessories.
You can add it to your sig.
You will go faster.

Unless you are running some major aftermarket eletric power sucking accessories, don't worry...

That is what I was worried about. I was going to add a system to my car and was thinking it would be a bad idea to do pullies with the system.

If you are worried about that, just get the crank underdrive pulley and not the alternator pulley. A4 guys usually do just that anyway. I beleive that most of the power saved comes from turning things like the water pump and not the alt anyway.

They even sell a alternator overdrive pulley so it turns faster...

Yeah and you will still retain the benefits of the u/d crank pulley.

Well, the major inherent disadvantage IMHO follows from the fact that you underdrive your water pump. The most power gains come from that extra power not being spent to turn the pump. Naturally if your water pump stops pumping water, less engine cooling occurs. However pumping lots of water through the engine won't do any good if radiator cannot cool it.. So theoretically at idle you might see temperature going up, but it looks like nobody complained so far and that would mean that ASP hit the mark with those pulleys.

ASP's underdrive pulley is a great piece. First I got ripped off by SLP when I bought one of their's for my '99 SS car. SLP's pulley gave everyone's LS1 car knock retard between 48-5000 rpm. It actually hurt performance. The best part is--they wouldn't admit it. Mine's still sitting in a corner of my garage--the "junk" area. Installed ASP's unit--KR gone. I have the same one on my '02 SS now. SLP =

Yeah luckily I head about that KR problem with SLP's pulley and avoided there's. No problems at all with the ASP unit.

Sorry to get off topic but can someone explain to me how the pulley creates KR

Somehow it's creating resonance or slight vibration and pcm is picking it up...The units were probably improperly balanced themselves upon manufacture. You know, "quality control" issues vs. "we'll send them out anyway, and maybe they'll be dumb enough not to know they're causing problems"....... WJ.

Let's say you put the pulley in, gives you 10rwhp. Then you add a huge heavy sound system that adds a good amount of weight to your car.

The added weight from the sound system will cancel out the added HP from the pulley.

Just my 2 cents.

oh I agree. But one sub and amp add to the daily drive enjoyability. Besides, they will be removed at the track anyway.

I have the asp underdrive crank pulley and the stock alternator pulley. I have no charging problems with a three year old battery and a large sub and large amp. BTW, this is through an a4

I have an ASP, but the older model which I have does not have the same harmonic dampening abilities as the stock one so I've been told. That could very likely diminish engine life in the long run, especially if you spin the motor to high rpms.
