Question What would cause a EGR to fail?

I just replaced my EGR today. Car was idling crappy and wanting to stall. My question is what would cause it to fail? My car has 55,xxx miles on it. Would having LT's have something to do with it. I installed my lt's this past April and Egr took a dump last week. Coincidence?

Coincidence = YES

Was it stuck open?

A chunk of carbon?

It had to have been stuck open or not closing properly etc. I tapped it a couple of times for carbon, but nothing. My concern was this just a random failure or could running lt's have something to do with it taking a crap.
