Default exhaust 101

Remember, I'm a noob. I know the basics but I have a few questions.

What exactly does "Off road" mean in regards to a Y-pipe?
I understand that dumping the cats will get you better flow, but wont you fail your sniff test if you do this? How do you get around that?
What TRUELY will be more effective, a true duel exhaust or can a Y pipe be just as good?
What exactly is a Bullit muffler and the likes, and how do they differ from any other muffler?
What does GMMG stand for agian?
What all does ceramic coating do for me on my headers?
What is the O2 sensor and how does it come into play in the system?
What all does a "cat back" system include?
Will all Ypipes/headers/mufflers fit together perfectly, regarless of the combination?

like I said, I know the basics but I want to re-do my exhaust right the first time (well second actually) so I want to COMPLETELY understand everything so I can be sure of what I want to put together and not worry about regreting it later because I didnt understand the small details. Sorry so long guys but thanks for your input.

offroad = no cats

yes; pay the inspector dude $50? who knows. Around here they do a visual, and no, they haven't take any money. You can just swap exhausts once a year, or get FLP headers that have swapable cats.

TRUE dual sucks. You always want some crossover. X-pipe is best, but for fit...go with a y-pipe and catback. X-pipes sound better too. You can search and find some sounds of exhausts.

A bullet muffer looks like a pipe...just a little fatter. It flows very close to straight pipe...and muffles basically nothing.

GMMG = who knows. Its a company that makes cars that are two expensive and pretty good catbacks.

ceramic coating reduces temp.

most efi cars use O2 sensors to monitor spent gases from the engine to regulate air/fuel going in (calculating for rich and lean). You need your front two, but the back two do nothing but tell the pcm how good the cats are working. you can get sims or program them out of the pcm.

everything from the cat...back. intermediate pipe to tail pipes...with a muffler inbetween.

not a chance in hell.

What exactly does "Off road" mean in regards to a Y-pipe? That it is designed and sold for off-road use only. The piece is not allowed or legal on public streets, only racing circuits.

I understand that dumping the cats will get you better flow, but wont you fail your sniff test if you do this? Big time! If you have a real tight tune, you could pass but you'll fail a visual inspection unless you hog out the factory cat housings and leave them intact. That's no guarantee either.

How do you get around that? Sometimes, you can't. If emissions are a concern, don't even think about removing the cats. It'll be more headache than it's worth.

What TRUELY will be more effective, a true duel exhaust or can a Y pipe be just as good? Generally, the true dual is more efficient but the Y-pipe setup is not all that bad when combined with some good aftermarket parts. My exhaust only cost me 4 RWHP on the dyno.

What exactly is a Bullit muffler and the likes, and how do they differ from any other muffler? A bullet is a round, usually around 3" muffler that is a straight through design. There is little, if any, noise control with a bullet. They are frequently used in an intermediate pipe to control rasp when using an off-road pipe (ORP).

What all does ceramic coating do for me on my headers?
It will keep underhood temps waaaay down and improve the life of the material. It's good to control rusting and durability. Plus, it looks damn good!

What is the O2 sensor and how does it come into play in the system? On a stock exhaust system, there are four of them: two in front of the cats and two behind them. The front two control the A/F ratio and need to be left alone. If you mess with them, the car will run like crap if at all. The rear two are designed to monitor counts aft of the cats to monitor engine and emissions performance. With an ORP, you can install a set of O2 simulators that will send a signal to the computer and act like the two rear sensors are there when they're really gone. Another way to remedy this is to have them "turned off" with LS1edit. If you take them out and don't install sims or turn them off, you'll get an SES light.

What all does a "cat back" system include? Generally, the pipes from the catalytic converters rearward. It will completely replace any existing tubes aft of the converters.

Will all Ypipes/headers/mufflers fit together perfectly, regarless of the combination? No, they won't.

Good luck. Hope this helped a little.
