Default What the heck type pipe do i have, X,I,or Y?

I got a 99 firehawk, what kind of pipe do i have, x,y,or I? Also could i get better flowing exhaust and more power if i ordered an aftermarket pipe (x,y,or I pipe) and applied it to my SLP dual/dual exhaust?

If its stock exhaust, its a Y-pipe.
Most X-pipes dump the exhaust before the rear axle with turn-downs, and will probably provide the most power. To use a cat-back exhaust you need to use a Y-pipe.

A new y by itself might not see any extra power especially on a stock exhaust. You may try getting some headers and a y pipe with no cats which will gain you alot of power. A well designed y might give you more power than the stocker but without headers you should just stay with the stock y pipe IMO.

Stock setup has a Y pipe coming off each manifold and joining into the I pipe. This follows along the car and goes over the axle, splitting into another Y to give dual exits. The X pipe setup is used with true dual pipes which are very hard to fit on these cars.

SLP makes a Y pipe that will fit the stock exhaust system. I think they claim a gain of 10 hp, but mostly it looks a lot better than that smashed stocker. There is also an "H" pipe that is used with dual exhaust systems in place of the X pipe. The purpose of the X or H is to connect the two sides of a dual exhaust system together to equalize them; this is proven to provide a hp increase. Dual exhaust is the most free flowing there is, but like pimpmaro said, duals on a 4th gen is kind of a looser because there just isn't room under there to do it right. The best exhaust system for a 4th gen IMO would be long tube headers followed by a 3"x4" Y pipe, then a single 4" I pipe going over the rear axle into a good straight through oval muffler like Borla or Magnaflow makes. Another approach is to just install a cutout in the stock exhaust.
