Default EFI with no ECM? 1998 Ls1 vs 2001?

I have a question. Could I ditch my ecm to run an msd 6010 without using a carb? If the msd unit can control timming/ignition, etc with a carb it can with EFI right? Also what is the difference between a 1998 ls1 and say a 2001? Thanks allot guys

No.......you can't. The PCM controls the fueling through several different sensors, MAF, MAP, O2 sensors...etc.. You cannot simply add a timing device without having control of the fuel. So, it's either dist./carb or PCM or dist./stand alone EFI controller.

The oiling passage on the rear of the block is larger on the 01 & they use different PCM's & operating software. Only sensor difference between the 2 is the ECT sensor. So, an 01 can be controlled w/ a 98 PCM if the ECT sensor is changed. However, the 01 operating system (software) is preffered.

Thanks. When did they increase the oiling passage size? I'm almost positive an MSD 6010 can control the timing, ignition, and drive the coils. It doesn't need a dizzy.

I don't know anything about the MSD 6010. The coils are ignition/timing related. However, if the 6010 has an EFI feature & accepts feedback from 02's & a few other sensors, then it would be classified as a stand alone (its' own PCM) & will work.

Just looked @ the link. It's only an ignition related device. You need an additional stand alone or carb for the EFI.
