Angry I broke the Oil Sender Assembly in the back of intake

Hey guys. I was wondering what exactly does the oil sender assy do? We put a Weiand on my car, and in the process I guess we snapped the lil bastard. So we got it all nice and torqued down, and everything plugged back in again. Went to start it and . It Had a vaccuum leak for one (located with starter fluid). But, the car was running way to strange just to be this vaccuum leak. It would like rev up to 3 1/2k rpms on it's own and sit the then go down to like 500rpms. It was vewry strange. We were realy pissed that it didn't work right. So we took the intake out and sure enough, that lil bastard was snapped off sitting in the back of the engine compartment. I'm gonna go get a new one on friday. What size socket do I need to tale the bolt off that hold it on? We put a 1 inch socket over it and it didnt seem to fit. Would this thing being broken cause the car to run this shitty?

Thanks Guys!
