Burning up alternators

Burning up alternators He has gone through 8 in 6 months. It only happens when he gets on it hard. It is a 2001 WS6 with the M6. Only mods are exhaust and a k&n besides that stock. Any ideas? I thought it would be wiring when he gets on it, it sends to much to the alt and burns it up but i would like some input before i start tearing into the wiring.

Could be the quality of the part. To much power to the alt. isnt possible because its battery voltage, 12v when off 14.7 when on and the atlernators voltage regulator monitors and adjusts that. If any fluid is getting inside the alt it could cause one to short internaly. But more than likely its just part quality, went thru 4 autozone alts and then finally got a NAPA (when they still had good parts) and it outlasted the car

and then even then the power was not ok after the car heats up a little
the fix was a truck alternator in place of it (the shop said it`s a bit bigger in size but he can fix it and the amp is more) and since then didn`t replacce it and always above 13 V on the dash
mine is a 98 Z28
just what happeneds with me and what was my fix maybe it`s useful for someone

it sounds like the exciter wire is messed up. It's the little plastic plug and small wire ontop of the alternator. its common that it happens, happened on mine and lost me 3 alts. Does his voltage drop to yellow when he goes full throttle?

its like 10 bucks and a pretty easy job since there's plenty of wire to splice into.

i went thru 2 rebuilt ones from autozone in less than a week. everytime i got on it they would quit working. i ended up just buying a brand new one from Oreilly's and it has lasted for awhile now.
You have a exciter wire problem, my car did the same thing, it would be fine for a couple of weeks, then once you got on it hard instanlly you have a dead alt.
I bought a new plug and ran a new bigger gauge wire from the pcm to the alt and have not had another problem since.
I would give that a try I think it will take care of your problem.
Also make sure you don't have power steering fluid leaking into the alt either

Had the EXACT same problem. My shop replaced the wires in the harness from the ALT to the PCM, it did nothing. Then I replaced a really crappy ground strap from the block to the body, and the positive battery/alt/starter harness. I also redid the battery ground on the chassis side. That solved my problem. I don't know if it was the ground strap or the positive harness, or the battery ground. But it works now, PLENTY of high RPM runs, no dead alts. My money is on the ground strap....the old one nearly fell apart. But if you are trying not to kill another alt, I'd check everything.
