Exclamation Descreening MAF?

Is this a good idea? If so, what is a link I can go to to figure out how to go about doing this.
thanks all.

u can do it but with an A4 i wouldnt unless u have a programer, i have heard of peoples transmissions shifting weird because the MAF flows more air after taking it out and it does somethign with the line pressure and the engine load calculation or something. i have an m6 so im not too sure on that. but mine is ported and descreened, no problems with mine

What he just described happens when you port a MAF. Not when you descreen one. The only danger in doing this mod is if you damage the metering wires or if you're using your MAF screen as you air filter (as in, your airfilter is being bypassed for some reason.)

The instructions are...

1. Take a pointed object like an ice pick or a very small screwdriver and poke a hole near the outside edge of the screen. Run it just through the screen. DO NOT ALLOW THE TOOL TO COME INTO CONTACT WITH THE METERING WIRES!!!

2. Pry the screen out.

Also, some people have cleverly removed the screen without damaging it so that reinstalling it is an option. I've know when I pull one that there is ZERO chance of it ever going back in so I don't bother but I thought you might want to know that.

He's right, only small gains even on a stong heads/cam engine. So small that you would have a hard time even proving it on a chassis dyno. Maybe 2-4 RWHP. On an engine making 500 RWHP, the gains would probably be a good bit more since the screen (and MAF in general) becomes more of a restriction at high power levels.

I've had a descreened MAF since 25,000 miles and I'm still on my stock 110,000 mile 4L60...it's only when you start porting the MAF w/out making calibrations do you truly start playing with fire on the Auto's....

Colonel's right though...there will NOT be a SOTP difference felt doing it.....

I say descreen it and go on w/ya bad self...hehe...

Or you could always do the safe thing and take out the 4 torx screws to separate the MAF sensor from the ends before trying to pry the screen out.

All this mod does is allow more CFM to flow through the MAF. I did it, no problems here...

Don't touch your MAF!! Why waste time on a MOD that is not going to really do anything. MODs for the most part cost $$$. I would leave it alone. But do what you like.
