Default Need LS1 Advice!

Hey guys just bought my first LS1 car, an Arctic White 2000 Camaro SS for $3200 from a dealers auction yard. Car is in great shape inside/out, straight body, clean title, and every option including T-tops and leather (not sure if CME was available in 2000?).

I'm very familiar with the LS2 but not so much LS1 and what they like and dislike. The motor has 130k and oil looks clean, compression test checked out OK, and car has TR55 plugs which look good. Car came with shaved/debaffled stock lid, K&N, Msd wires, some type of race clutch, 10-bolt with Eaton Posi, 4.10's, Moser axles. My plans are full bolt ons, 175-shot, tune, LCA's, SFC's, shocks, and swap the built 10-bolt for a Ford 8.8. How does my mods list sound so far? The 175-shot would make the car pretty competitive for what it is. Just hope its not too much for the stock internals. Suggestions needed!

Nice buy

I think a 175 shot will do your 130,000 mile LS1 some serious harm.

I would back it off to 125 to be safe.

But if you got money laying around for a new engine....

IMO 150 is max safe for stock Hyper pistons. I blew a ringland on #7 on a N/A 434rwhp H/C/I car..... It is not uncommon so be prepared for anything.... If you do it make sure plenty of timing is pulled and the tune is dead nuts on....

I have seen purpose built no2 cars spray 300 and last and even a 500 shot and the bottom held but it would push water.....

hmm...I know an LS2 could put up with that kind of power. Well I might consider a smaller shot then.

I'd run the 175hp shot on it. For $3200 total price, I would run the crap out of it. You know 125hp won't be enough anyways. Then once it blows, drop a stroker motor in it.

Ha ha I hear you. Only problem is this 130k motor runs VERY good and i'm not ready to blow it up quite yet. Runs better than some of the lower mileage ls1 cars i've rode in. I take it the previous owner took pretty good care of it. I would like to run the stock bottom end for a little while longer and then a nice stroker will find it's way in.

Save for the 9" instead of an 8.8 unless you can get a really good deal on a pre-fabbed 8.8. Depending how nice you are to the car, the rear will be the first to go with the 4.10's.

Depending on what year LS2 you are referring to, the engines have pretty close personalities, except for the bore. 05 and 06 LS2's have different heads and intake (IIRC.) Different knock sensor locations and PCV system, IIRC.. again..

Thanks for the suggestions guys!

I'm going to put the 125hp jets in for now and put it on the dyno and see what that gives me. I'm hoping with full bolt ons and LT's I can see 450rwhp and over 500 wheel torque. I placed my order for the LT's & Y, Powerbond u/d Pulley and Ngk Tr6's today!! I am also going to the dealer to try to pick up some OEM plug wires and dump these MSD's! I'm getting a killer deal on a 8.8 so im gonna go with that, plus I know from experience they are pretty strong. I'll finish up the bolt-ons with LS6 intake & ported TB, maybe some rocker arms, then throw some suspension & tires and finally tune then see what she'll do.
