Default Prepping deck surfaces

I have my heads off right now and Im wondering how everyone is doing the deck surfaces on the block and heads. Last time I had them off, I just scraped them with a razor blade and used some cleaning agent w/ a towel.

Should I hand sand with 220, or 400? Should I use a block to keep it all even or will hand sanding even be able to make waves in aluminum? Thanks all

I've seen a couple blocks being milled that had been hand-sanded (or brillo-padded-ed-ed) and "cleaned up" with scrapers, and just about all of them were uneven. Aluminum is really soft, and really easy to mess up without knowing.

I'd think some denatured alcohol and rags would get it cleaned up decently.

I just use plastic scrapers from the painter's section of a hardware store with rags and solvent (primarily brake cleaner and paint thinner). I would not use any steel wool product, or sandpaper and only use a razor blade (carefully and sparingly) on bad spots.
