I wouldn't recommend something like steel wool with thin/fine/small pieces which could be broken down by the corrosive blow-by and possibly be sucked back through the engine. It does look like you used something with a large/thick enough pieces so you should have to worry about it breaking down and possibly getting sucked back through the engine.

Please don't use steel wool!

I mentioned it because in my research months ago into other available cans on the market I discovered several that filtered the vapors through steel wool.

I would agree not to use actual steel wool. The curled up stringy stainless scrubbing ***** seemed nice (and convenient [and inexpensive]) and it does the job.

I suppose the stuffed canister slows down the vapors and traps it until it forms droplets that fall out.

You could probably use even less material in the canister(you don't want to impede the air flow), since the air flow cools the metal mesh causing the hot oil vapor to condense.

BTW, I approve of the extra crunchy(I hate the creamy!)..!

I recommend Shop-Vac brand "Foam Sleeve" as catch-can filler. Works great in my home-made "can" (actually it's an electrical box). With this filter plus ls6 valley cover, no more oil through the pcv.

I just ordered the MightyMouse PCV can! Not only do I think it's the best looking can on the market, but from what I've found on the web...it's the functioning one. He's clearly done his research. I'll post pics as soon as it gets here and I get it installed.

Moroso made up a clear catch can to show what it does.

I like the idea of a clear container that shows what's in it. Jegs has a clear one also.

plastic / foam /glass all are poorer conductors of heat than metal, and will hinder condensation within the can in a comparably cooler location than oil temp.

they do look cool if you have a camera mounted under hood!

Looks like I'm catching about an ounce of oil for every tank of gas, maybe 225 miles.

I popped off the air intake today and I'm happy to see the throttle body and intake was bone dry and free of any oil.

This was a little project that worked out very well for me. I'd do it again.

My truck's home made can is working well. I love that it's a clear container! What I find at every (2500) mile oil change:

It isn't about the cost, I want a full size clear can. Jegs has one but it's tiny.

But feel free to start that go fund me account!

I've got to agree, it's a good marketing tool to clearly show how much oil a CC can stop from making it way into, an through heads. Otherwise it really does nothing to aid condensation. I do have to admit a glass container does have instant visual appeal/gratification, instead of a few seconds later like with a aluminum CC , which you'd have to open up first.
