Default MSD ignition with stock coils

I am new to the LS1 engine and muscle cars in general, i just got my 1998 Z/28 about 4 months ago and its completely stock. a few days ago i got a MSD-6AL for $50 off a pill head (let the man make his own mistakes) Will this ignition control work with the stock coils or do i have to dump the crazy cash into new ones?

No. The MSD box will not work with any coil near plug ignition system. It's almost as if the stock system is eight separate ignition systems. The stock coils are specifically designed to work with the PCM and provide some feedback so the PCM knows what's going on. These coils are more than just coils.

The stock LS1 coils are remarkable in design and function and very powerful. Later coils (LS2/3/4/7 etc.) are more powerful than LS1/6 coils. The LS2 truck coils with the exposed heat sink are the most powerful GM offered.

The coil harness is unique to the LS1/6 coils, all others have a different connector keying and pin-out.

As your car has perimeter bolt valve covers with direct bolt-on coils, you're pretty much stuck with the original coils. 99 and up went to center bolt valve covers and bracket mounted coils making coil changes easier.
