Default Headers question

So I want to upgrade my headers from the stockers, but due to emissions where I live, I can't have LT headers. Since LT's aren't an option, what's my next best bet?

Currently have stock headers, SLP catted Y and LM1

why are the LT's illegal if you still ran cats ? We dont have strict emission laws in KS, thats why i'm wondering.

Because with LTs you are relocating the cats further away from the engine. In fact, that's illegal in all 50 states, but only California really does something about it.

But shorties on the other hand do not relocate the cats, so even with an aftermarket high flow cat you will be fine. Most places would not be able to tell that the cats/pipes are aftermarket.

With an '01, you'll likely see very small gains with shorties over stock manifolds.

i think shorties are a waste along with mid lengths but some states suck for that stuff.

Do they visually inspect the exhaust for emmisions? Or do they just hook up to the OBD II? If they dont visually inspect, you can get the longtubes and the O2's tuned out, that way when they hook up to the OBD, it will still read as if they were stock mani's. I have LT's w/ ORY and I still pass emissions =)

Only one way for sure and thats to not do it at all but theres a couple ways you can do it.
1 do the setup that you want but switch back at emissions time. Sounds crazy but if you work on your car all the time like me its not ALL that bad.

2 get a setup that has cats but hollow them out if you want. That way you have the SHELL of the cat for visual but no comb on the inside.

3 get the setup you want and hope to god that when its emissions time they DONT do a visual.

My emissions needs to be done in a few weeks. I may just do any of the above options im not sure yet.
Maybe I should just try now and do 3 and maybe ill get lucky with no visual check. hmmm

Technically they are suposed to check obd and do visual. But some shops will just plug in the dummy gauge and be done with it.
