Default What size pipe to run? From Y-pipe to dump after axle

Hey guys looking for some advice here, I apologize if it's been asked hundreds of times which I'm sure it has. I plan on getting rid of my corsa cat-back because honestly I'm not a fan of how it sounds, and my girlfriend telling me my car sounds like a dirtbike was the last straw lol. I want to run a straight pipe from the y-pipe back, up and and over the axle, and have a 4.5" or so tip pointing down, starting at where it starts to turn down above the axle and end before it can be easily seen (will be powder-coated black). I saw a camaro with a similar set-up and it sounded deep, which is what I'm after. Any way I'm just wondering what the best size pipe to run would be? I have Kooks headers and Kooks off-road y-pipe. I will have a bullet style muffler welded in place as well. I know too big will hurt performance as well too small. Was thinking just keeping it 3" all the way back since that is what the y-pipe is I think, but wanted some other opinions as well. Thanks in advance!

i would go 4" but thats just me. i don't think that there will be much more performance to be had if you went larger than that. you should check out the mufflex 4" catback. i had the mufflex 3.5" on my car for a while with a spintech muffler and it had nice a deep tone to it.

Thanks for the advice poltergeist! I just didn't know at what point you start to lose power by going to big on the pipe, if that's even possible.

if u want a deep sound without that 'dirt bike' or 'pop corn machine' sound, get a highflow cat but thats jus me with the turndown setup.

If u are running straight pipe, your girlfriend will smell the gasoline in the cabin.. and it will be loud and raspy.. might want to consider a cutout, would be cheaper and maybe a lil more convenient with the same sound your trying to achieve

but if ur hellbent on straight pipe turn downs, go with a 3" IMO

Thanks for the input LeanPocket, Im going to be welding in a bullet style muffler in place so it won't be a true straight pipe per say. I'm thinking a loudmouth 2 muffler would sound good.
