Default Is It Safe?

Im curious. I came across a vid on youtube of a NBM camaro that was doing a transmission swap. Well long story short, The guy removed the y pipe, Left only the manifolds and cats on, turned it on super loud. Is it safe to run them open? will a service engine light come on. Reason I ask is because when I removed my cats the service engine soon light came on. Now if the cats are on, will it do the same?

This is the vid Im referring too.

No, You do not want to run the car with just manifolds,, the PCM will have a fit, You wont have any reference from your o2 sensors, so It wont run well. And will defintately throw codes, Not to mention, I have always heard that running open manifolds can damage your exhaust valves, You can delete your cats,, but you have to have the rear o2 sensors deleted in the tune of the pcm also. While you are doing that you might as well get the works,, common mods to these engines, AIR delete, EGR delete ETC. Frost can do it for you, as well as alot of other fellas. I bet it was super loud and sounded like crap in person,, Manifolds do not have the sound of an open header, they are short and do not build velocity as a set of headers do.

Ya its no big deal to run straight out the y-pipe.

The reason you got an ses light was because of the rear 02 sensors. These are in place to monitor catalytic converter efficiency.

You can have them tuned out, or run 02 sims.

why would there be an issue running open manifolds? yes it will throw codes but thats the rear O2 codes which wont effect performance or cause damage...

Open headers won't hurt the exhaust valves.
If you want noise.
Get a cutout or 2. I put LTs and an ORY on my car last winter (garage season). I kept the stock Z28 catback on the car. I had ther modding itch last week and decided I was ready for a cutout.
I had one welded into the ORY right behind each LT. With the cutouts open it sounds beautiful. Attach a few bolts and its quiet again.
Kind of like pulling the y-pipe, just a lot easier.

Those guys are retarded. Bet that car was cold and he bounced it off the limiter. And that is not how a v8 should sound, open manifolds sound like my old *** truck.

Bring this back up....

I actually just installed a ls1/t56 in my '85 camaro. I have the Hawks long tube headers and currently don't have any exhaust piping.

Well when I went for a test drive, it seemed a little hesitant and kinda like it was sputtering? Anyways, since it's straight headers and the o2 sensor is about 2" from end of collector, will that cause it to run the way it is?

YES, the O2 needs 10x the collector diameter otherwise it'll read rich; in your case pig RICH!
