Default Please Read! Question about Mufflers adding HP/TQ on a....

I'm the owner of a 99 Z28 and a 1990 Cadillac Eldorado. Because I own the Caddy I found a Cadillac forum called www.cadillacforums.com. I came across a post about a guy wanting to add a chip and a flowmaster to his 93 Coupe DeVille. He claimed it would add 3-4 tenths of a second. I posted saying it's a waste of money and to leave his car stock. I told him the muffler will add no power and the chip would prob only add like a tenth or two in the 1/4 mile if even that!

First things I did to my Camaro were, SLP Loudmouth Cat back, air lid, 85mm maf, and LS1 edit tuning like firmer shifts for the tranny and advancing timing slightly. With those mods and a similar condition day I ran the same exact times. I then realized I had to do some bigger mods like a cam or a convertor to see some real gains.

My questions for you guys are, what do you think a flowmaster and a chip would add to the 4.9 V8? Am I right or will it actually make somewhat of a significant difference as in 3-4 tenths.

Also, the 4.9 liter V8 makes 200HP and 275lbft TQ.
That guy said he ran a 16 in the 1/4.

If you would care to read the posts go to http://www.cadillacforums.com/forums...0&page=1&pp=20

If you would choose to post on the Caddy Forum don't be derogatory or even say you're from LS1Tech. Those people who want to Mod their Caddy's obviously don't like me. I don't want to look like I'm trying to bring in my LS1 buddies to back me up, I'm just curious myself as to if I'm right. I think I am but am not 100% sure.

Later Guys

A) Why would you want to mod a '93 DeVille (sorry, had to get it out).
B) Exhaust frees up a few ponies (your loudmouth freed up anywhere from 5-15 ponies on your car). Flowmaster catback is awful on our cars, but I'm sure would free up a GM OEM exhaust on a Caddy (I have no facts to back this up, so just talkin' out my ***).
C) Welcome.

A few things to think about. Our ls1 cars are pretty good from the factory-manifold,exaust, tuning etc. A 93 caddy is not so. A muffler, chip and other mods will result in more of a gain for him than an ls1 car. My iroc with a open aircleaner and a gutted cat resulted in a .8 reduction in the 1/4 with a flowmaster muffler. Thing pulled a 14.6 with those mods only. 305 carberated lg4.My 94 caddy was stock but ran pretty well. They get great traction

I agree with SouthFL.

The Cad exhaust system in that era was built for quiet an no resonances, etc., not for power. A free-flowing muffler would probably help. Unfortunately I don't think F-Masters are the way to go. I'm partial to Dynomax Ultraflow either in SS or Welded configuration. They flow like crazy because they are a straight thru design, but not obnoxiously loud. A 2-1/2 with a case length about as long as the stock Cad would be my choice. The equivalent Magnaflo would be about the same.

Intake plumbing is probably set up for low noise, so there is a place to do some cheap help. K&N probably has a filter for it. The chip would probably help especially with the less restricted intake and exhaust. So would the typical things like reducing weight (no spare, no rear seat, low fuel load) high rear tire pressures(FWD on the Eldo, right?), 93 octane gas. I don't think traction will be a huge problem. I'll bet you can get your 3-4 tenths improvement.

I said the same thing about, "WHY WOULD YOU MOD A CADDY!!!" The guy with the DeVille said he wanted to be unique and he loved his Caddy, just wanted more ponies out of it. I guess that's a reasonable answer. Also, they don't have a Flowmaster Cat Back for Caddy's he's just talking about putting on the muffler. Everything else would be stock.
