Mac Headers People

I read that there was a ticking noise on acceleration with the Mac headers, Is this true ??? Whats the problem ? I`m using a 98-99 set up on my 02. I did block the EGR valve. Havent installed them yet but I read about this in a couple of sites.

No ticking for me, but it could be one of three things. 1) Piston slap, which has nothing to do with the headrers. 2) Leaking, the headers are leaking due to inproper install or a faulty weld. 3) Check valve flutter, where the pulsing action of the headers and the pulsing air moving through the check valves makes a flutting sound, usually destroying the check valve.

Sometimes on the MAC's they weld poorly around the AIR tubes near the merge collector. That's where the noise is probably coming from.

I had ceramic coated MACs on my 98 with a custom made y-pipe and 3" collectors welded on in place of the ball flanges. No ticking with mine. I could hear the valvetrain a little better, though, with them on.

Before I bought my Z06 I had a 1998 SS Camaro I put the Macs on it and had the "fluttering issue" it drove me nuts I called the Company I got them from and told them what was going on....they sent me out "metal reducer gaskets" that allowed less air to pass through, reduced down to like 1/2 the size of the existing gaskets.

This cured the issue that you are experiencing for me.

My FLPs have a very small hole in this hole, they weld them up and drill a real small hole through the tube area ROUGHLY a 1/4".

If you are getting flutter, buy some sheet metal, cut them to the same shape as the gaskets on the AIR tubes, and drill a 3/16" hole in the middle to let air go through. This will let the least amount of air to pass through without throwing a code.
